The name Toraja means “people of the uplands.” The Toraja are natives of the southern mountainous region of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Many of the Toraja are Christians, but some are still Muslims or animists. The animism still found in this region is known as aluk, or “The Way.” The Toraja have a great preoccupation with death, evidenced in their elaborate funerals and burial sites carved into rocky cliffs. A funeral may go on for days and be attended by hundreds of people. These people, though they have now been reached by the gospel, need to be awakened to a personal experience with Christ that will bring their faith to life.

Prayer Requests

  • Pray for the Toraja people to become free from their traditions, especially their morbid preoccupation with death.
  • Pray that listener communities where people can talk, ask questions, and fellowship with other Christians in the area would be established.
